Williams began his professional career as an artist when he was in his 30s. After serving in World War II, he used G.I. bill funds to enroll at the Brooklyn Museum School of Art from 1951-1955. Over the next decade, he traveled to Mexico, London, Rome, and Copenhagen, where he eventually settled and spent the remainder of his life. After his experience living in Mexico, he concluded that “freedom from racial prejudice was essential for his further development."
This print was purchased through La Salle University Art Museum’s early membership with the International Graphic Arts Society (IGAS). IGAS used world renowned curators and artists such as A. Hyatt Mayor and Ben Shahn to select contemporary artworks for publication in editions of 210. Artists were given an international following, with half these works (100) sold in the United States and the other half in Europe; 10 proofs were reserved for the artist.
