Originally from Venice, Italy, Scarpa studied architecture and printmaking then worked for several years as a mountain guide. He settled in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1958, where he established himself as an artist, then relocated to Oslo, Norway, in 1970, becoming a Norwegian citizen in 1978.
Scarpa often explored complex combinations of materials in his art, including metal foil overlays and embossing techniques to highlight both reflective and textured surfaces. His abstract works from the 1960s demonstrate his interest in the geometric concerns of international Modernism. In this etching, a fiery double circle seems to collide with and transform a series of linear striations, spilling out chaos even as the lines settle in feathery undulating patterns.
