Born in Georgia, Bartlett studied under Sidney Goodman and other realist painters at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He later apprenticed under Nelson Shanks, founder of Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia. Bartlett’s work recalls American realist traditions, as defined by artists such as Thomas Eakins and Andrew Wyeth. His preference for the familiar subjects of home, family, and friends prevails in his monumental canvases (see Olney Hall Lobby for three examples) and in this intimate self-portrait as well.
