Sam Maitin was a Philadelphia artist known for his printmaking, painting, collage and sculpture. As a youth, he attended Simon Gratz High School and earned a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art (now University of the Arts). Over the years, he created public art for many local institutions, and he became deeply involved in the cultural community, serving on Woodmere Art Museum’s board from 1995-2004. He also designed colorful abstract posters for numerous organizations and political causes, weaving in poetry and other texts in flowing cursive script.

For A Friend 5 illustrates Maitin’s exuberant and playful style, inspired by the paper cutout collages of Heni Matisse. Bold paper shapes are arranged in a vaguely human form, floating against a background of soft smoky colors, presenting a joyful and uplifting effect. The title refers to the artist’s dedication of the work to his friend Benjamin Bernstein, a noted Philadelphia collector and patron of the arts.
