Bullock was born in Philadelphia, PA, and studied at the Hussian School of Art and the Fleisher Art Memorial. During the 1960s, racial tension in Philadelphia sparked her interest in exploring the historical and ancestral roots of African American culture. She has travelled extensively in Africa and the African diaspora. With her artwork, she focuses on creating visual stories that reach back into ancestral histories, ceremonies and rituals. In this mixed media collage, Belief, Bullock layers vibrant patterns, colors and forms to create an evocative spiritual scene inspired by her experiences visiting 12th-century rock-cut churches in northern Ethiopia.
