Willie “Bill” Shoemaker (1931-2003) was one of the most successful jockeys in the U.S., with a career spanning over 50 years. Warhol’s painting of Shoemaker was the first in a series of athletes’ portraits commissioned by art collector Richard Weisman. The series included portraits of O.J. Simpson, Dorothy Hamill, Muhammad Ali, and other sports celebrities.
