Catlett often addressed the subject of literacy and education for the poorest members of society. In Alfabetización, she depicts three Indian women seated with rebozos around their shoulders. One of the women reads from a book, as the other two listen attentively. This print was made for the national literacy campaign established in 1944 by the Mexican government. In 1953, Catlett’s image of Alfabetización also appeared on the cover of the official publication of the national literacy campaign.
