At the blowing of trumpets, various plagues descend upon the unfaithful. After the fifth trumpet is sounded, a bottomless pit opens and locusts emerge to torment humankind for five months. These fantastic insects have men’s faces, women’s hair, lions’ teeth, and scorpions’ tails and wings whose batting creates a thunderous noise.
These woodcut illustrations, after those of Lucas Cranach the Elder, are from "Das Nau Testament" (Dresden: Wolfgang Stockel, 1527) with polemical notes by Jerome Esmer for use by German Roman Catholics.
