Gallery Label:
Williams was an important African American artist, known for his idyllic images of carefree children and sunflowers. After completing his studies at the Brooklyn Museum School, he traveled to Mexico, London, Rome, and Copenhagen, where he eventually settled and spent the remainder of his life. New Day, painted early in Williams’ career, depicts a salesman at a fruit and vegetable stand, with the orange and red colors of the early morning sun saturating the scene. The painting was exhibited in the Annual Exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1955.
