Gsell was trained as a painter by his father, Caspar, and Alexandre Cabanel. Although much of his oeuvre reflects his academic training, he also dabbled in various modern styles and illustrated children’s books and periodicals. This image focuses on the physical labor of the workers. Similar images of iconic, muscular, bare-chested workers in the last quarter of the nineteenth century coincided with labor movements, strikes, and debates. Gsell was likely influenced aesthetically, if not politically, by artists such as Belgian Constantin Meunier (1831-1905) and Neo-Impressionist Maximilian Luce (1858-1941), who sympathized with the plight of laborers and created works motivated by socio-political sentiments. Like them, Gsell depicted the bent over figure to emphasize the sense of toil.
