Nelson Shanks, American, (1937–2015)

Object Type: PAINTINGS
Creation Place: North America
Medium and Support: Oil on canvas
Accession Number: 95-P-420
Gallery Label:

As a now world-renowned artist, Shanks flouted trends in Post-Modernism to promote a renewed interest in classical realism and academic painting. About his own working method he stated that “I almost never do drawings, because I have found over the years that doing something in one medium and translating into another doesn’t work. I like to conceive a painting in real scale and in color.” Shanks, who lived and worked in Bucks County, is best known for his commissioned portraits of Pope John Paul II, former U. S. President Bill Clinton, and Princess Diana; but he was equally adept at creating small, personal figure studies such as the carefully composed and lit Jan. As a dedicated and life-long teacher, he established an apprentice program in his home, and later founded Studio Incamminati, a full-time atelier program located in Philadelphia.
