Ron Rumford originally trained as a painter at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Soon after, he started at Dolan/Maxwell Fine Print Dealers, working his way from the ground up and becoming its director in 1991. This association engendered a shift to print making as his main artistic practice. Rumford has a "love of the matrix," a willingness to surrender some control to the plate and the press. His delight in the surprises offered by the printing process throws light upon his preference for monoprints over editioned multiples. His interest in texture can be seen here in the use of corrugated cardboard packing material as a "ready-made" plate. His love of line is apparent in the arabesque design, perhaps swept out by the titular aerialist performing a feat of grace and danger. Rumford uses his prints as elements to collage together, creating a whole greater than the sum of its parts.
