Born in Tupolo, Mississippi, Sam Gilliam earned a B.A. and an M.A. from the University of Louisville, Kentucky, and currently lives in Washington, D.C. He is associated with Washington Color School, a regional group of abstract artists inspired by color field painting in the 1950s and 1960s.

In this print, As Kids Go, Gilliam presents a swirling display of colors, form, and textures. He juxtaposes and layers hand-made papers and paint splatters to suggest a dynamic rhythm and a spinning movement which is both powerful and playful.
