Born in a rural area of North Carolina, Watson studied at the Fleisher Art Memorial and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). He has worked at the African American Museum in Philadelphia for many years, most recently as Exhibitions Manager and Artist-in-Residence. In 1983, Watson became a member of Recherché, a Philadelphia exhibition group dedicated to showing the diversity of work by African American artists, inclusive of both representational and abstract art. He has painted murals at various institutions, such as the Church of the Advocate in North Philadelphia, which reflect his concern for social justice issues in an urban environment. This painting suggests the artist’s development from representational work to a more abstract personal style evoking feelings and memories.
