Catlett expands upon themes that were important to her, such as parenthood and music making. Whereas her earlier images typically stressed one ethnic group, her later works seem to be preoccupied with racial mixing and multiculturalism. In Children with Flowers, an older black woman embraces children of different races. Their smiling faces, warm embrace, and brightly patterned clothing produce a lively and celebratory image.
