Chase-Riboud is as a well-known writer, poet and sculptor. Born in Philadelphia, she earned a B.A. from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art in 1957 and an M.F.A. from Yale University in 1960. She also studied at the American Academy of Rome and travelled extensively in Europe, Asia and North Africa.
Chase-Riboud attained international acclaim for her best-selling historical fiction novel, Sally Hemings (1979), which tells the story of an African American slave and her rumored relationship with President Thomas Jefferson. The publication sparked a great deal of controversy at the time of its release, but recent scholarship and DNA analysis has led to a greater public acknowledgment of this historical relationship.
The print, Akhmatova's Monument, presents the artist’s vision for an unrealized sculpture conceived as an homage to the influential Russian poet Anna Akhmatova (1889-1966).
