The Artist Georges Michel and Son, 1797

1797
18th Century
9 1/2 x 7 in. (24.1 x 17.8 cm)

Jean-Marie Degault, French, (c. 1763–1818)

Object Type: PAINTINGS
Creation Place: Europe, France
Medium and Support: Oil on board
Accession Number: 73-P-109
The artists Georges Michel, Jean-Marie De Gault, and possibly his father Jacques-Joseph De Gault, were among other artists and patriots imprisoned together in the Plessis prison during the French Revolution. The painting is evidence of ongoing friendships among radcalised artists.

The inscription, "J.M. Degault fecit / le 10 prairial l'an V / de la Revolucion", presumably refers to the events of Prairial, Year III, two years earlier, that had led to their joint imprisonment.
Current Location: Art Museum : 18 C Gallery
