The original basilica burned down twice in the fourteenth century, and in the seventeenth century, what remained was in danger of collapsing. Pope Innocent X gave the task of restoring the building to the famous architect, Francesco Borromini, in preparation for the Holy Year of 1650. It was during Borromini's restoration that the church was given its Baroque look seen here.<BR/></SPAN>", "Dedication" : "", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "PRINTS", "Creation_Place2" : "Italy", "Department" : "", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/74-G-485.jpg", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/74-G-485.jpg", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/74-G-485.jpg", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/74-G-485.jpg", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "2784", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 1544, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/1544", "Disp_Access_No" : "74-G-486", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "c. 1746-1748", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1746", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1748", "Disp_Title" : "Veduta della Basilica e Piazza di S. Determined to escape, Daedalus crafts handmade wings of feathers bound together with wax. He warns his son to fly midway between the sun and the sea, and he leads the youth upwards into the sky. As Ovid describes in Chapter 8 of his <i>Metamorphoses</i>, “Proud of his success, the foolish Icarus forsook his guide, and, bold in vanity, began to soar, rising upon his wings to touch the skies; but as he neared the scorching sun, its heat softened the fragrant wax that held his plumes.” In this illustration, Icarus falls tragically from the sky, losing feathers as the wax melts from his handmade wings. His astounding flight, and that of his father depicted in the distance, is witnessed by fishermen in their boats. ", "Dedication" : "Gift of Susan M.
