His work reflects the influence of Western art, African sculpture, Japanese prints and Chinese paintings. In Piano Lesson, Bearden depicts a teacher standing over a student while giving a lesson. The image was inspired by the Pittsburgh jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams and was originally featured on a poster for a dance and musical collaboration between Bearden's wife Nanette and Williams. Born in Philadelphia, he earned a B.F.A. from Tempe University’s Tyler School of Art, and an M.F.A. in printmaking and drawing from the University of Washington. A major element in Dowell's art has been to find an abstract, visual interpretation for spirituality, poetry and music, particularly jazz. His recent work includes photographs that capture high energy, reflections and movement—from nocturnal cityscapes to rural agricultural landscapes with cotton fields. In Dream Cleansing, Dowell combines new digital technologies with traditional print making techniques to create a modern dreamscape. The Heart is symbolic of his Candomblé faith, an Afro-Brazilian religion, and his vision of a burning heart during his initiation into the religion. Langston Hughes, Alain Locke, and Marcus Garvey called for race-conscious art and Thrash was among the artists who embraced their thinking. <BR/><BR/>Here Thrash depicts a little girl absorbed in the act of reading </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:10pt;font-style:italic">Life </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:10pt">magazine. The choice of </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:10pt;font-style:italic">Life</SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:10pt"> magazine em­phasizes the girl’s identity as an American. Art historian Richard Powell asserts that the “non-racial genre” image soft sells the idea of “commonality” and “unity” rather than separation in the African American experience of childhood.<BR/><BR/>Between 1930 and 1947, African American illiteracy rates stood at 11-18% compared with 2-4% for European Americans.3 Thrash had left school after fourth grade, which was not uncommon for an African American growing up in rural Georgia in the early 20th century. Thrash was an autodidact who studied by correspondence while living on the road as a teenager before attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His art career began with political cartoons for the African American newspaper, The Indianapolis Ledger, while receiving formal art training at the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis.1 Woodruff went on to attend the Art Institute of Chicago and spent four years in Paris (1927-1931), where he was heavily influ­enced by the Cubist Movement. <BR/><BR/>Upon his return to the United States, Woodruff accept­ed a position as the first art instructor at the Atlanta University Center, and his artwork began to develop characteristics of Regionalism and Social Realism.2 His apprenticeship under famed Mexican muralist Diego Rivera in summer 1936, working with Rivera’s standard high-keyed colors, influenced his work throughout the rest of his career.3 Additionally, he often incorporated African symbolism in his artwork, which in later years became more abstract. After the Watts Riots of 1965, Riddle came to see art as an opportunity to educate young African Americans about their history. In this print, Making Plans, four adult figures stand over a table covered with a large map of world, under a bright overhead light. The woman on the left uses a pen to sketch an architectural diagram. The patterns on this diagram are replicated in the edges of the table, in the horseshoe shapes on the wall, in the window frame, and in the outer border of the print. Born in Philadelphia, she earned a B.A. from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art in 1957 and an M.F.A. from Yale University in 1960. She also studied at the American Academy of Rome and travelled extensively in Europe, Asia and North Africa. Chase-Riboud attained international acclaim for her best-selling historical fiction novel, Sally Hemings (1979), which tells the story of an African American slave and her rumored relationship with President Thomas Jefferson. The publication sparked a great deal of controversy at the time of its release, but recent scholarship and DNA analysis has led to a greater public acknowledgment of this historical relationship. He served as a Tuskegee Airman in World War II, and then lived several years in Paris and in Haiti before returning to teach at Philadelphia College of Art and Bucks County Community College. Keene’s artworks were inspired by his personal experiences at home and abroad. His works explore cultural ideas, including Haitian voodoo practices, urban American street scenes, and contemporary jazz music. This print, Solomon’s Bride, portrays a woman at a window, or possibly a portrait painting, framed within a circle upon a colorful striped wall. As in many of Keene’s images, the figure’s head is haloed, evoking references to religious icons and deified heroes.
