In 1924, she began a 35 year career teaching art at a D.C. junior high school. Teaching allowed her to support herself while pursuing her own painting part-time. Thomas became an important role model for women, African Americans, and other artists. She was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art in 1972, and she exhibited her paintings at the White House three times. In Female Nude Standing, Thomas presents a painterly sketch of a nude woman using white colors surrounded by vibrant patches of reds and oranges. Thomas’ early artworks were representational, though her Howard University professors challenged her to experiment with abstraction. Female Nude Standing was created when Thomas had just begun to experiment with abstraction. Emerson taught art at the Agnes Irwin School from 1916 to 1927; at the Philadelphia College of Art from 1929 to 1936; and at Chestnut Hill College 1948 to 1956. She also worked as a curator and director of the Woodmere Art Museum from the early 1940s through 1978. She received her first commission from the Penn Publishing Company to illustrate </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:10pt;font-style:italic">Old French Fairy Tales</SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:10pt"> (1920). She was 19 years old and had recently been diagnosed with tuberculosis. She was soon commissioned to make illustrations for another book, Tanglewood Tales, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Unfortunately, while her art was on the rise, her health was on the decline; and her illness greatly affected the rate at which she could complete her drawings. She left commissions uncompleted at her death in 1931.<BR/><BR/>Sterrett’s illustrations for the </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:10pt;font-style:italic">Tanglewood Tales</SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:10pt"> reveal the influence of European design styles such as Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Art Nouveau (also known as Jugendstil), which reached the height of its popularity from 1890 to 1910, was inspired by organic forms, such as plants and flowers, and emphasized harmony with nature. In contrast, the Art Deco style, which developed around 1915 and became influential in the 1920s and 1930s, employed a more geometric visual language celebrating industrial order and embracing modern technologies. Prosperina Refuses the Pomegranate characterizes the Art Nouveau style with its asymmetry, contrasting colors, flat yet ornate patterns, and rhythmic movement of the branches that flow and curl in the background. This illustration for the Tanglewood Tales, a children’s mythology book, tells the story of Proserpina, the Roman goddess of spring, who has been kidnapped by Pluto, the god of the Underworld. While the story is hardly a feminist one, Sterrett portrayed her as the femme nouvelle (new woman), the ideal Western woman who rejects traditional femininity. As depicted by a female artist, Proserpina has agency and refuses Pluto’s hand in marriage. The asymmetry places more objects on Proserpina’s side, suggesting her strength. Born in Rhode Island, Albee studied at the Rhode Island School of De­sign from 1910-1912, then in 1913 she married mural­ist Percy Albee, with whom she had five sons. In 1928 she moved with her family to Paris where she associated with other expatriate artists and developed an interest in urban and rural landscapes; then in 1933 she returned to the United States and lived in New York City. In 1937, she moved to Doylestown, PA, where she became absorbed in the rural subject matter for which she is best known. <BR/><BR/></SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:10pt;font-style:italic">Co-operative Farm</SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:10pt"> illustrates Albee’s precise woodcarv­ing skills and her love for rural landscapes. The viewer is drawn into the scene by the road in the foreground, which curves upward and leads into the eye back to­wards the farm buildings and silos. Sprawling shrubs and a tall central tree add foreground interest, and viewers are offered a tantalizing glimpse between the farm build­ings into an area with a single laborer carrying a load. There were three distinct groups of Chicago Imagists which exhibited at the Hyde Park Center. Both Nilsson and her husband were part of the “Hairy Who” group with four other artists, exhibiting together from 1966 to 1968. In 1973 Nilsson was the first “Hairy Who” member to have her own solo show. After traveling in Europe for several years, she moved to Nebraska in 1929 and became inter­ested in depicting the suffering of workers and animals. In 1934 she worked for the PWAP in Omaha; then in 1935 she returned to New York City and worked for the WPA/FAP in the silkscreen unit of the Graphic Arts Di­vision. A prominent Social Realist, she was a member of the Artists’ Union and the American Artists’ Congress and actively engaged in the struggles of workers. She did illustrations for the Communist paper New Masses, and in 1936 she wrote an important essay advocating the production of fine art prints for the masses. <BR/><BR/>Side Show was made during Olds’ tenure with the WPA/ FAP in New York City. The setting is a carnival or fair, with big tents and a Ferris wheel in the background. Side shows featuring an emaciated thin man or “human skeleton” were common at the time; however, Olds’ de­piction should be considered in light of her social con­cerns. The scene takes place near an entrance to the fairgrounds, within a shallow stage-like area lit by spot­lights highlighting a megaphone announcer in the cen­ter. Three portly individuals stand gawking on the left, and a marching band plays on the right. At age 18 she entered the religious order Immaculate Heart of Mary, eventually teaching in and then heading up the art department at Immaculate Heart College. Her work evolved from figurative and religious to incorporating advertising images and slogans, popular song lyrics, biblical verses, and literature. Throughout the ‘60s, her work became increasingly political, urging viewers to consider poverty, racism, and injustice. In 1968 she left the order and moved to Boston. After 1970, her work evolved into a sparser, introspective style, influenced by living in a new environment, a secular life, and her battles with cancer. She remained active in social causes until her death in 1986. I love the Ocean. -Reika Iwami Iwami Reika was a Tokyo-based modern and contemporary abstract artist whose work was a major part of the Sosaku Hanga (Creative Print movement). After studying oil painting, doll making, and printmaking in Tokyo, she decided to focus on printmaking in 1954, working with three of the most important modern printmakers in Japan. Iwami would later join the Japan Print Association in 1955 and co-found the Women’s Print Association, Joryu Hanga Kyokai, in 1957. Her work is located in the Library of Congress, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the British Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Iwami rarely relied on bright colors, preferring to use a solid black background in order to accentuate the texture on the surface of her woodblock prints. To accomplish this, she would press objects such as wood against the paper to capture elemental qualities such as the surface grain. In the absence of colors, the audience can appreciate how the textured forms and metallic silver sprinkles stand out against the black setting. Sea, Evening Calm is an early work of Iwami, done before she established her signature style of gold foil and embossing techniques. Here Iwami incorporates a method called mica originating from the late Japanese Edo period to create a shimmering surface in the print.
