He tried to kill Toyotomi Hideyoshi but failed and was sentenced to death by boiling. He was executed in front of the main gate of the Nanzenji Temple in Kyōto. His young son was also put in the cauldron but it was said that Goemon held his kid above the boiling water up to his death. The life of this larger-than-life robber was dramatized in both Kabuki and the puppet theater. This print after a drawing by Van Dyck is a three-quarter length portrait of Henry Fred­erick Howard, the 22nd Earl of Arundel, the son of Sir Thomas. He wears armor reminiscent of his father’s, as captured in a portrait by Van Dyck’s mentor Peter Paul Rubens. His helmet sits on a column to his right. It bears an inscription that reads “Droit et Avant”(“Right and Front”), surely a reference to his readiness for battle. Behind him, through an open window, are dark and bil­lowing clouds above the ocean coast. Some lauded his ability to mesmerize viewers who are compelled to scrutinize the lines on the surface of the print even as the form eludes them in the process.The avid print collector and connoisseur Michel de Ma­rolles, the Abate of Villeloin, gave the artist the idea for this celebrated print of the Sudarium. With one line, beginning at the center of the composition on the tip of Christ’s nose and spiraling outward, the printmaker cre­ated the image of the impression made by Christ’s face on St. Veronica’s veil, providing what is thought to be His only authentic portrait. <BR/><BR/>The inscription “Formatur unicus una, non alter” in­forms us that the composition was completed with one line, and dares others to replicate it. This is a venture rare in the history of American graphics. Wood-engravings are cut with burins on the highly polished end-grain of a very dense and refractory wood - in this case, South American boxwood. Shahn has provided the image - Martin has engraved the block and supervised the printing. Both artists have signed the prints. Until the invention of photo-mechanical engraving, all illustrations in newspapers and books were created and printed in this way. In recent times this practice has been almost wholly abandoned. This print is of Annie Oakley, a popular sharpshooter performer in the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. Despite being from Pennsylvania, the traveling show’s sensationalized version of the Wild West allowed Oakley to become a symbol of the Wild West’s mythology. Her most famous trick was shooting a gun backwards and never missing her target, one of which included a cigarette in the Kaiser of Germany’s mouth. As part of her legacy and mythos, Oakley allegedly asked to shoot a second shot after the Kaiser’s role in WWI. She would later retire due to an injury and advocated for women’s rights, even teaching sharpshooting as self defense. The print colorfully outlines Oakley’s medals, highlighting her accomplishments as a historical and cultural icon. Today we can criticize the inaccurate portrayals of the Western genre and Warhol’s use of the screenprints-- creating flat, vivid, and stylized images- highlights the artifice of the Wild West and Oakley created by pop culture.
