The terms “Pre-Columbian” and “Pre-Hispanic” designate art made by purely indigenous civilizations in the Americas before the arrival of the Spanish and Portuguese. Although Christopher Columbus landed in the “New World” in 1492, Spanish control and influence came after later regional defeats of local peoples. For example, the “Pre-Columbian” era ends in 1521 for Mexico and 1532 for the Inca in Peru.
