An angel directs St. Joseph’s attention to the road ahead, while his family rests on its journey to Egypt. According to Matthew 2:13-15, after the Three Kings visited Jesus’ birthplace in Bethlehem, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and instructed him to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt to evade the brutal actions of King Herod, who plotted the Child’s death. Following artistic tradition, here the angel continues to guide the family on their journey.
